A shadow market for unapproved slimming drugs is propelled by TikTok fitness influencers and vendors on messaging platforms, according to new investigations.
Experimental Treatment Gaining Traction Online
Retatrutide, which remains in research studies, is being promoted by social media influencers for its alleged weight-reducing effects. Viewers are encouraged to contact these accounts privately for supplier links, while also receiving discount codes.
Active Trade on Messaging Platforms
Separately, a robust trade exists on Telegram, where communities with thousands of participants share comparison photos, administration instructions and assertions of next-day UK delivery. Sellers market the drug there before redirecting customers to WhatsApp for purchases.
Understanding Retatrutide
Retatrutide is an experimental injectable developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The treatment affects three gut hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon. Preliminary studies suggest it could help patients reduce up to a quarter of their total weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted digitally as the next Ozempic.
Healthcare Professionals Voice Worries
However, physicians and pharmacists have warned that the distribution of what is still an unlicensed drug in the United Kingdom is a cause for concern and could lead to individuals administering products of unknown origin.
Several experts said the demand for the experimental drug could be connected to the increasing price of licensed slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.
Legal Status and Enforcement
Marketing the unapproved drug on TikTok or messaging apps is prohibited in the United Kingdom, as it is an unapproved medication that cannot be promoted or supplied for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.
Some content creators attempt to sidestep the rules by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a controlled substance, but promotion and distribution can still violate pharmaceutical, marketing, and consumer regulations, potentially leading to penalties, prosecution or imprisonment.
Service Reaction and Content Elimination
Based on the social media company, the platform has taken down violative material and prohibited related hashtags and query recommendations. The organization said it was dedicated to maintaining the platform safe and allocating resources in strengthening enforcement strategies.
Digital Marketplace Operations
Investigations also discovered groups with up to 9,000 participants selling the experimental drug using the platform's integrated search feature, which functions like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” instantly displays channels with numerous of users, filled with images of slimming results, positive reviews and detailed guides for mixing or administering at home.
Within moments of joining one group, a vendor shared contact information, where most transactions occur. The seller provided an instruction manual and guaranteed shipping within 48 hours. When asked whether the product was authentic, one vendor said: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a image of a supposed laboratory certificate. Not one asked about body mass, health issues or previous experience.
Product Details and Pricing
Inside these communities, posts show black plastic parcels with postal service stickers, claiming to include fresh supplies. One message read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Buyers can choose between powder vials, prepared at residence with purified liquid, or ready-to-use pens usually sold at 160 pounds for 20mg. When asked how long a pen should be used, vendors give contradictory responses ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.
Service Oversight and Security Measures
A representative for the messaging service said it actively moderated dangerous material on its platform including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Medical Professional Warnings
“Individuals are administering materials they can’t verify. Although the research behind this drug is sound, these online versions may not contain what they advertise,” said Jason Murphy, the head of pharmaceutical services at a pharmacy service.
A medical professional of an online medical service connected the increase in demand to recent cost increases for authorized weight-loss drugs such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, individuals are turning to online platforms. But fake injections are extremely risky. You can’t be certain what’s inside or whether the conditions they were made in was clean,” she said.
Her team has already encountered patients harmed by self-injection from unconfirmed sources. “We recognize the disappointment, but purchasing from Telegram or communication platforms is gambling with your well-being,” said the doctor. “These materials could be contaminated or improperly measured.”
Producer Position
A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company said retatrutide was in third stage clinical trials and had not been reviewed or approved by any regulatory agency globally. “Therefore at this point no one can market [it] for human use,” they explained, adding that any item “falsely representing itself as a Lilly experimental product not yet approved … may expose patients to potentially significant medical dangers”.
